At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram from Colonel Toland of the 34th Ohio infantry to Brigadier General Scammon. Reports that "Thurmans gang" captured William Richmond, Allen T. Richmond and Isaac Kales on 15 February. States that they met Flannagan's men and had a brief skirmish. Does not know where they are now. On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph.
