At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Scammon of the 1st Provisional brigade appoints a board of survey consisting of Lieutenants from the 12th Ohio volunteer infantry, John Lewis, James W. Ross, and Hiram McKay to examine a deficiency in clothing and commissary stores damaged or unfit for use for which Acting Assistant Quarter Master Lieutenant Jonathan C. Wallace was responsible. Written from Headquarters of the 1st Provisional brigade at Camp Jones. Countersigned (in copy) by Lieutenant James L. Botsford.
