At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain Gilmore of the 1st Virginia (West Virginia) Cavalry writes to Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio to report one wounded soldier since the advance on Raleigh, West Virginia. Written from camp at Flat Top Mountain, West Virginia. Docket is very light but says, "Killed, missing, & wounded since leaving Raleigh, May 20, 1862."
