At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Rice, 1st Lieutenant of the 23rd Ohio and Chairman of board of survey, reports to Colonel Scammon about the contents of a box of clothing. States that the actual contents differ from what was supposed to be inside and lists the number of pants, shoes, etc.
