At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram from Colonel J. C. Paxton to Brigadier General Scammon from Buffalo, West Virginia informing that he came from Ripley, West Virginia and that the Confederates are not there but it is reported they are six miles on the right. With autograph endorsement signed by Scammon asking how many Confederate troops. On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph.
