At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio writes to General Cox commanding the division at Charleston to inform that the roads are very bad from Gauley to Fayetteville, West Virginia. Recommends waiting for the weather to improve before marching. States, "To march now wd be more fatal than a battle." Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
