At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio writes to General Cox commanding the military division at Charleston that a recent dispatch from Cox makes him anxious to get the tracing paper Cox promised. States he wants to compile a map and they cannot afford to lose time. Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
