At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio regiment writes to the Ordnance officer at Wheeling, West Virginia to report that he just returned from Cincinnati and that the Quarter master is at Charleston so he will forward the receipts as soon as he returns. Year inferred from Scammon's rank.
