At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lovell, aide-de-camp for (and possibly a relative of) General Mansfield Lovell, writes to Lewis (John Lawson Lewis, of the Louisiana militia). Lovell writes "I am directed by Genl Lovell to say that he has this day recd your invitation to Review & Inspect- the troops of your division on the 8th instant; and to say that he will accept the invitation you have extended to him with great pleasure." Written on Confederate States of America, Head Quarters, Dept. 1 stationery.
