At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Autograph manuscript. Reports on the Battle of Gettysburg (fought 1-3 July 1863 near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania). He mentions the replacement of General Joseph Hooker by General George G. Meade. Writes on 28 June 1863, "...heard of a change in the command of the Army. Gen. G. Meade having superseded Genl. Hooker. The first impression was unfavorable but as we were somewhat accustomed to such freaks not much was said on the subject." Mentions the death of General John F. Reynolds and provides details, including troop movement and battle positions, during the Battle of Gettysburg. Writes (3 July 1863), "a glorious day to us 'we had met the enemy & licked him.'" Written in both ink and pencil. Approximately 83 pages.
