At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States: "I was ordered by Gen Whiting last night to be in readiness to move at a moments warning & to have the Battery in readiness also. & farther to report all vessels in the [offing?]. I suppose he anticipates an attack from the Beach...we are looking out for lively times here soon." Also asks Wortham to send a box of cartridges. Written from Headquarters at Virginia Creek, earthworks that were part of coastal defenses of Wilmington.

John C. Van Hook was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Fiftieth North Carolina Infantry.
