At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gatlin received Wortham's recommendations for promotions for Best and Penny but cannot issue any other commissions until the commission for Captain Ryals is issued.

Richard C. Gatlin, after retiring early in the war as a Confederate Brigadier General, served as the adjutant general and inspector general for North Carolina.
