At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bryan, Assistant Adjutant General, writes from the Confederate Head Quarters of the Trans Mississippi Department on behalf of Department Commander Edmund Kirby Smith. Informs General Walker that Smith withdraws a previous order to make a public letter (3661) "in regard to crossing the Miss in command of your old Division."
