Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cabinet card showing the winter home of the Stowes with four people sitting on the front lawn, including Harriet Beecher Stowe and her husband, Professor Calvin Stowe. Inscription on verso states the house has been torn down. Inscribed "For my friend Chas G. Ball[illegible] / Fm. Mercer[?] / Apr 6-1914."

The Stowes established a winter home in Mandarin, Florida in 1867.
