At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

President Kennedy informs White, the Business and Financial Editor of the newspaper "The Christian Science Monitor," that the Marshall Plan was implemented to "encourage the economic integration of Western Europe," not to establish Europe as a "band of followers." States that the economic markets of the United States and Western Europe have the combined resources to "rally men and nations to the cause of freedom the world over."
