At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Treadwell orders Captain Oakes of the first regiment of Massachusetts militia to organize a guard unit from his company and have them report for duty at 6:30 at the Court House to receive orders. The United States was then engaged in The War of 1812.
