At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Walton signed the letter as Magistrate of Police. States that Mrs. Harrison ought to relinquish the house she holds. Requests that the Commandant will force her removal if she refuses to give up possession. Note at bottom signed by James St. Clair stating that the Commandant will order force to be used if Mrs. Harrison makes it necessary.
