At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Van Buren praises O'Sullivan for the discretion and talent he has displayed in covering news as editor of the newspaper, "The New York Morning News." He states, "Its general aspect is precisely what I desire to see in a Newspaper ... " Letter written from his estate, Lindenwald in Kinderhook, New York.
