At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He sends his sympathy and reports there is no charge for digging graves and burial lots. He writes about Samuel Powell's arrival in the town, his work lecturing and writing for different papers, watching his last disease, his death on May 7, and his funeral. No middle name listed for Samuel, so could be Samuel Wells Powell or Samuel William Powell.
