At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Major and Assistant Adjutant General Whiting informs Semmes of modifications made to recruiting details. Also instructs that as per General Joseph E. Johnston's directions, "it is expected that a Bill providing for recruiting the One year Regiments, with men for three years or the War, will immediately become a Law."
