At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks recipient for book of poetry. Discusses dinner plans with William Wilberforce and Zachary Macaulay. Buxton, Wilberforce and Macaulay were British abolitionists who worked for social reform. The letter also mentions Secretary of State Huskisson in relation to the Khoekhoe. Buxton also mentions meeting with Dr. Philips "on the subject of his Hottentots."
