Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hopes to insert into his private copy of "Poets of America" original drafts or autographic copies of poems by the authors represented in the book. He is also collecting engravings of the authors, and asks his correspondent to send a photograph if such an engraving does not exist. Unsigned, but name pencilled in at bottom.
