Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Massachusetts. General Court (1862) Proceedings in the Legislature of Massachusetts, upon the Act of the State of Maryland appropriating seven thousand dollars for the families of those belonging to the sixth regiment of Massachusetts volunteers, who were killed or disabled by wounds received in the riot at Baltimore April 19th, 1861.

Published by Wright and Potter. Includes Massachusetts Mayor John Albion Andrew's statement requesting the Maryland General Assembly to inform the Massachusetts General Court of action taken regarding relief of Massachusetts soldiers slain or disabled in the Baltimore Riot. Contains acts passed in Maryland and Massachusetts for relief of these soldiers and their families.

The 19 April 1861 Baltimore Riot took place when secessionists attacked Union soldiers passing through the city on the way to Washington, D.C., in response to President Abraham Lincoln's call for troops.
