At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First two volumes of a four volume set. Published by Dodd, Mead & Company. Printed by the Vail-Ballou Press, Inc. in Binghampton, New York. Dedicated "To Ruth, whose unfailing help and interest illumined the labor of these pages." Details the life of Lincoln from his birth and time growing up in Springfield, Illinois to his speech at Gettysburg. In volume one, the right edges of chapter fourteen are uncut. Red cover with gold stamped lettering on the spine and front cover. Sewn binding.
