At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John C. Calhoun was a senator from South Carolina, secretary of war, secretary of state, and vice president of the United States twice. He was a pro-slavery advocate, a supporter of states' rights and was one of the main proponents in the South Carolina nullification crisis in 1832-1833.
