Thanks Fry for sending a memorandum that proves that Morse was interested in having the government own the telegraph invention back in 1844. States that he made concessions to make it easier and less costly for the government but that they did not take advantage before the offer expired. Believes that this is now to his advantage and that it would not have been a good idea to have the government control the telegraph.

Mentions being disappointed that he had to cancel a fishing trip with Judge Stilwell.

Addressed "To the Colored People of the United States." Defends Grant as a friend of African Americans and cataloges the ways in which he has helped the black race. Two months prior to this letter Douglass declined Victoria Woodhull's offer to run as her Vice-President on the Equal Rights Party ticket.

Stearns, Harrison, a freed slave, offers condolence for William's death and inquires about a gift of land William promised him. Writes in part: "You said something bout conveying my lots to me. I had just write to mass Wiliam a little before his death...he promest to convey to me as soon as he could be satisfied that the laws of Miss. would allow colored people to hold land. Also signed by Emmanuel Lebreton Deschapelles, who swears an oath of allegiance to the Constitution of the United States following the Civil War. Deschapelles vows to " ... faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves." Contains a five cent stamp. Contains a separate note, signed by Sheridan 8 June 1866, stating that no taxes should be collected for the period in which the plantation was held by the military.
