Describes the October 1835 mob which kept William Lloyd Garrison, the editor of the Liberator, an anti-slavery newspaper, from having a meeting where Mr. George Thompson, an abolitionist, was to speak. Garrison had to be put in the jail to be protected from the mob. Printed by Welch, Bigelow, and Company, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Says he has been busy "flying" all over the United Kingdom completing business. Is pleased that their offices are being organized efficiently. Says business is good except for "those bug-bear Alabama claims." American claims against Great Britain for outfitting the CSS "Alabama" privateer had gone to an international arbiter, which will hurt their bottom line and might lead to war between American and Britain.

Sumner, a Senator from Massachusetts tried the previous day to locate Douglass at his office, but was too late. Writes "I beg to talk with you about the Republican party & its perils to which I fear you are not sufficiently sensible... Pray don't drive the wedge to split us. Let us try to leave the colored people in their rights..." Dated "Sunday." Not in Douglass's or Sumner's Papers and apparently unpublished.

Sumner clarifies that he stated that whatever Douglass may think of the "Presidential indignity" every one had a right to express their opinion "in as much as it concerned race."

Imprint of a building with "Congress" superscripted in upper left hand corner of each folio. Strother was writing "Life of Jno. Brown and the Harper's Ferry Insurrection" which was never completed or published.

Grant, while Grant escorted Minister Plenipotentiary Lewis Campbell to Mexico. Jubal Anderson Early, a former lieutenant general in the Confederate Army, writes to former Confederate admiral and brigadier general Raphael Semmes regarding correspondence with a German who has created a flying machine that could be used to bombard northern cities. Says "...I have this day received an offer from a German who says he has invented a flying machine, to dedicate to the Southern Cause, which he says is not lost...he says we can bombard and destroy...Northern Cities with his flying machines. I will publish the letter as a fitting comment in all the fit Northern papers are raising…

Raphael Semmes writes that, while in Baltimore, he has inscribed a copy of his book and ordered the publishers to send it to Kell's "little son, my namesake." He fondly inquires after Kell's family. Raphael Semmes, commander of the famous raider CSS Alabama was promoted to admiral in the Confederate Navy in 1865, and briefly served as a brigadier general in the army following the fall of Richmond.
