Initial letter was written by Francis Taliaferro Brooke, a judge on the Virginia Supreme Court to Monroe as Secretary of State requesting a recommendation for a naval position for Dr. Benjamin D. Russel. Brooke said Russel's health was damaged during his work as a surgeon of militia in the War of 1812 and that he was ordered to breathe sea air to recover it. Asks Monroe to oblige this experiment. On verso over address, Monroe endorses the request to the Secretary of the Navy. Initialed "JM" after his endorsement.

One bill of sale dated March 22, 1810 signed by William Payne and John Moncrieffe. The document details that two enslaved people named, Peggy and Hager were sold for $438.51 to Johnathan Lucas. Moncrieffe, the attorney for George P. Cosseral and his wife, arranged the sale for the Cosserals who were in England. Printed by G. M. Bounetheau. State seal of South Carolina printed at the top of the document. Fragile.

He had been attempting to sell the land to liquidate his debts as early as 1814, when he placed advertisements in various newspapers. He was not offered what he thought were satisfactory offers. Describes the land in glowing terms. Says it is 33 miles from Washington and Alexandria, well watered and timbered, with several good farm houses and a grist and saw mill. Written by Monroe as Secretary of State. Recipient inferred from docket. "Mr. Gales" is Joseph Gales, the editor of the National Intelligencer newspaper. This is an advertisement titled "Letters miscarried," that was eventually printed in the May 21, 1814 issue. Advertisement says he sent two letters under his frank on May 5, 1814 to his brother Andrew Monroe in Aldie, Virginia, that were lost. In one letter there were seven notes for $50 each along with land papers and other accounts of value. Says there will be a $50 reward for their return.

Complains about the mail taking a long time to arrive. Discusses sheep and gives advise on the amount of ewes and rams to purchase. Explains that he would like to assist him in purchasing the sheep but the heavy debt he incurred while president is crippling him. He must now pay it out of the his profits and will have to sell part of his estate. Reports that he has received his quilt from Mr. Carr. Mentions a ram that he will send for the last week of August and says that he will mate him in September, so the lamb will be born in February, as January is usually the severest month.
