Legal document for the purchase of the slave Kate and her three children Ben, Caleb, and Nancy. The purchaser was "a free African" named Harry Compton, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, and he left an "X" as his mark. It appears that Kate was Compton's wife and the three children belonged to them. The slaves were sold by their owner Anne Acker, of Amwell Township, New Jersey, for 100 dollars due in one year from the date of the document. Also notes the slow progress of the Ways and Means Committee, the resignation of General Henry Dearborn for health reasons, and the recovery of President James Madison from an illness. Discusses witnessing a demonstration of "liquid fire, inextinguishable for a period, by water" by a "Mr Lloyd of Adams in Pennsylva" and the products potential for weaponry. Gerry was then vice president. Written from the chamber of the senate. One engraving of "Elmood," once the residence of Elbridge Gerry, included as collateral.

Sent to Elijah Brown, Jr. Esq. Circular sent in response to criticisms of the Embargo Act of 1807 by people in the town of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Explains and defends the Embargo Act as a recourse for securing the United States' rights to freely navigate the ocean. Argues it is "the only honorable expedient for avoiding war." Jefferson received the petition from Brown on 13 October 1808. GLC00016 is a similar printed letter from another town in Massachusetts (now Maine), though it is the result of a different printing.

Thanks Everett, Adams' law apprentice, for a letter written in a classical language (Latin or Greek). Senator Adams praises the value of "ancient learning," but writes this letter in English because he has not used his knowledge of the ancient language in a long time and feels his skill may have diminished. He then comments on the law books Everett has read, specifically works by Lord Coke and Blackstone. He also recommends several other works for Everett to read. Adams concludes with some comments about his family.

He apologizes for the delay in responding due to outfitting a revenue cutter to cruise against violators of the Non-Intercourse Act. He reports that he has received a letter from R.H. Dana of Provincetown. In the letter, he praises education, and includes local news intended for Channing's mother and mentions a letter of recommendation for R.H. Dana. He asks that the letter be forwarded to M.R. Dana. A poetic note is written on the envelope leaf.

In the letter, William Ellery writes to his grandson that he is happy Channing has gained a business partner and inquires as to who drew up the legal documents executing the partnership. He believes theological differences in the world will persist, and that everyone would get along if they treated each other morally. He comments that a religious war would be much worse than the War of 1812. He discusses a preacher and his success with parishioners. He comments on the Channing family moving from Newport, Rhode Island, to Boston. He sends his love to all the members of the family.
