In florid prose, Peabody appeals to Langdon's patriotism in order to enlist his support for the War of 1812."Our enemies are in our bosom." Recalls their service in the revolutionary war and seeks Langdon's attendance at an assembly to organize support for the federal government. In a postscript, comments on the Essex Junta's plans to lead New Hampshire and Vermont to secede from the Union and attempt to establish an eastern confederacy. Peabody was a New Hampshire legislator. Langdon had served as the state's governor.

Responding to a letter about Hughes's crab apple. (Spelling Mease's name "Maese.") He tells the origins of the Taliaferro apple by Major Taliaferro about 60 years before, near Williamsburg, and which he called the Robertson apple. When Taliferro "made a cask of cyder [it was]... the finest they had ever seen." Jefferson compares the Hughes crab apple to the Taliaferro and finds the latter "has more body, is less acid, and comes nearer to the silky Champaigne than any other." Written in Monticello

Says that Porter was appointed to the board of the Naval Commission (a post he held 1815-1822) by the President and that he is to report to the department at his earliest convenience. Porter was a successful naval commander during the War of 1812 and later led the Mexican Navy from 1826-1829.
