Perry, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces on the western coast of Africa, writes from the U.S.S. Macedonia (off the coast of Monrovia) to Lieutenant Commodore Craven of the U.S. Brig Porpoise. He directs Craven to survey anchorage at Fish Town, near Cape Palmas. He details how the survey should proceed with regard to the study of tides, winds, weather, beach conditions, and coastal resources. He reminds Craven to pay attention to the crew's health. With a signed postscript about chart making. Perry was engaged in suppressing the slave trade off the West coast of Africa. (Also see GLC00722).

Countersigned by Secretary of State Lewis Cass. Minard Granger was convicted in October, 1853, and imprisoned in Auburn, New York. Buchanan pardoned Granger near the end of his sentence on the recommendation of his trial judge N. K. Hall. Reasons cited were that Granger gave valuable information to the marshal after his conviction and that his health had been destroyed by imprisonment. Incldues a blue paper ribbon on second page.

Reports of a local stable fire in which eight of sixty horses died and nearly all their carriages were destroyed. Two days later, their was an attempt to set fire to another stable. A hackman was suspected. Mentions good weather and discusses skating. A note on the back, possibly a response to a letter from Annie mentioned in the letter's main body, records a day's schedule a Brown.

At the Capitol in Albany. Criticizes Missouri aid societies that offer large bounties to proslavery inhabitants of Kansas. Deplores the allowance of slavery in Missouri, referring to the Missouri Compromise as liberty bargaining with slavery. Also condemns violation of the Compromise. Declares, "The right ballots could kill slavery this year. But delay a few years, and it will take bayonets to do it."
