Responding to a letter from Whitman asking about the religious beliefs of various founders including Washington, John Quincy Adams, and Jefferson. For Washington and Adams, Pickering refers him to other people. About Jefferson he writes that a published letter he read had "no distinct acknowledgment of the divine mission of our Savior, but an equivocal sort of language, from which different inferences would be drawn by different readers," and that his political writing had the same quality. Pickering disapproves of Christians that do not actively counteract the doctrines of infidels.

He asks Savage to pay special attention to the letter on the pilgrims, and discusses the pilgrims motives for coming to the new world. He also mentions Mrs. Hutchinson and Mr. Cotton, who were responsible for bringing the Doctrines of Grace to public favor, and compares modern Calvinism to "the Antinomianism of 1636." May asks if early New England Churches used creeds or formalities of faith.

Written by one of Rush's secretaries. Rush thanks Beck for the copy of the sermon, "On the Errors of Ultraism in Morals and Religion," Beck sent to him through Mr. Williams. The sermon was preached at Newport the previous summer. He briefly praises the sermon. The bottom half of the page has a newspaper clipping glued to it that has no apparent connection to the content of the letter.

Ruskin comments on who should and should not be turned out of the Church and on the relationship between Church and State. Ruskin does not entertain Furnivall's many questions concerning the Authority of Scripture, stating: "If the Bible does not speak plain English enough to define the articles of saving faith -- burn it, and write another -- but don't talk of Interpreting it."
