Sylvia talks about food and clothing available at his Camp [Lewis]. Just heard in the office that Italy has unconditionally surrendered and that Russia will be a party to the exact terms. Says another phase of the War is over and it means that it is one step closer to his coming home, and that many lives will be saved by this. Moe has now been in the Army for six months. She is glad his hay fever is not bothering him.

Written at home, Friday night. Sylvia took the car to work because Mad (sister) was able to get gasoline for 50 cents a gallon after waiting in line for an hour. Had three emergencies in Intake. She has also arranged to buy 400 tickets from the Paramount at 38 cents apiece to resell for 55 cents apiece to raise funds for the Union. Reports on his family. Went to see her mother, who wasn't home. The neighbors offered her a drink "but she is still on the wagon" even though her condition is gone. Talks about remembering him in civilian clothes.

Written at Rose's House. Sylvia has just had a long conversation with Rose about the outcome of the War. Tells Moe about meeting their Congressman and making him promise to vote against the Dies Committee and join the "Fighting 40." She asks Moe if he sent away for an absentee ballot and to get others to do so as well. Sid returned the gas ration coupon he "borrowed" from her, but remains lazy.

Is happy that Moe told her he may be shipped out, as she always wants to know what is going on with him. Agrees with him that Italy's surrender is not too be cause for too much joy, as it is now the German's first line of defense and they will fight for it. Knows his chances of getting into OSS are nil.

Had a hectic experience, caught in the car during the blackout. Went to the 67th Police Precinct and took shelter there. Letter is incomplete and ends abruptly.

Reports that Leslie Smith is disgusted with the Royal Maritime Service, because they wanted to ship him back out too soon, after being injured. The Union helped him get a passport to Canada. He is through with the English Navy and will ship out from Canada in a Canadian ship. Tells Moe to "say the word" and she will join the American Red Cross Overseas in England.
