Title: to James S. Wortham

Writes to his father regarding activities of his regiment, his request for a furlough, and possible promotion. Says his regiment recently destroyed a railroad bridge. Their current encampment is "indeed a picture of desolation"; he hopes they will be leaving for Virginia soon. There is an upcoming election for a new Colonel, which he doubts he will win, but does not consider it impossible. Written at "Moseley Creek," eighteen miles south of Kinston, North Carolina.

Title: Charges and specifications preferred against 1st lieutenant A Landis Jr of the 2d Regt. North Carolina Volunteers

Charges Landis with violating the sixth and forty-fourth articles of war and with "conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline." Charges resulted from Landis's failure to report for "guard mounting" and subsequent "violent, insulting and insubordinate language" directed towards Wortham, his superior officer. Excerpt: "…On Capt. Wortham replying 'I will be treated with respect in my office' the said Lieut A. Landis Jr. of the 2d Regiment of North Carolina Volunteer did say 'Damn you' or 'damn it' 'I treat you with as much respect as you deserve' or words to that effect…

Writes his father saying his regiment is leaving for Virginia, his application for a furlough was denied, and he is temporarily in command of the regiment. Informed by a General that he "cannot be spared from the field," but he expects to be granted a furlough soon. Wortham is in command of the Regiment because Colonel Washington is sick. Adds, "P.S. May 19th I have just learned where we are going to. It is Virginia. We have been waiting here since the 17th for transportation and do not know when we can get off - perhaps tonight, perhaps not in two or three days…."
