Title: to Robert Livingston re: the marriage of their children

Winthrop apologizes for his previous lack of written salutations, and begins with expressing his surprise at understanding that John Livingston was interested in the hand of Mary Winthrop, believing that Livingston had visited him on his return home only to express "a Civillety". Having discovered the younger Livingston's intentions in the older Livingston's letter, Winthrop is non-committal as to granting his blessing to this union, as "she is my onely child and most deare to me." Title: to Robert Livingston re: news of their children and Samuel Vetch

Winthrop sends news of John and Mary Livingston's [having wed in April 1701] arrival to New London with Samuel Vetch on the 7th of June, on their way to their trading mission in Canada. Winthrop states "[I] hope you did well understand [their plan] well before hand and I wish it had been contrived that by an Indian or other wayes wee might have heard of their Arrivall." Winthrop begins with a diatribe against the "Blockhead that past through the Towne with the maile" and subsequently did not pick up a letter which Winthrop had intended for Livingston. He then writes more seriously of his support for Livingston in his struggles to regain his expenditures - "I wish you safe against all designes that may hurt your interest and hope you have foreseene to guard Against the Envy of prejudiced and unreasonable persons." Winthrop happily writes of the "preservation & safe returne" of John Livingston and Samuel Vetch, and claims to have had "many doubts." He states that he has heard "but a little" of their plans for the next voyage, and writes of an "Act layde before the Lords Spirituall and Temporall for reuniting to the Crowne the Government of Severall Colonyes & Plantations in America."
