12 March 1930
White, W.A., fl. 1930
Autograph letter signed
Title: to Arthur Ruhl
One letter dated U.S.S. Rochester [Euporter] to Port-au-Prince, March 12, 1930 from W. A. White. Critiques the president's orders to evacuate Haiti. White believes that the evacuation is a reflection not on the Marines but rather on Herbert Hoover. He mentions attending a parade to avoid a protest. During the parade an old woman in a blue cotton dress ra up to him with a "home made flag crying" in French. He feigns not understanding her, for concern of appearances and blows her a kiss as he gently pushes her back into the crowd.
