At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Chisolm Massacre: A Picture of "Home Rule" in Mississippi. 2nd edition, published by the Chisolm Monument Association. In 1877, Judge Chisolm was accused of assassinating a Democratic political opponent. He, his son and daughter and two friends were killed by a 300-strong mob reported to be the Ku Klux Klan. No one was punished for the murders.
