Title: to Josephine Waud re: experiences with Army of the Potomac; Chancellorsville

A long letter to his sister concerning his experiences in the Army of the Potomac. "We fought for three days against Lee and 50,000, and owning to the stupidity of our General 'Fighting Joe Hooker' lost the Battle and between 30,000 and 40,000." He also adds: "I took the train to Frederick where our party exchanged the iron for flesh blood horses and rode to the Battle of Gettysburgh." Includes envelope [from another letter?] and albumen photograph of Waud.

Title: Charge of Meagher's Irish Brigade... Fredericksburg

Black and white ink and gouache painting of the Battle of Fredericksburg on 13 December 1862. It depicts Meagher's Irish Brigade (the 63d, 69th and 88th NY, 115 PA and 28 Mass.; shown carrying a battle flag with Irish harp) charging Marye's Heights. The flag was carried in this battle by the 28th Mass. In the upper right on a crest, Marye's house can be discerned (with the columns). At the base of the house are smoke and gunfire flashes, marking the location of the Confederate infantry in the sunken road. Meagher's brigade was shattered in the charge.
