Title: [Legal Document on confiscation of slaves]

Written by the Declaration of Independence signer George Walton. Was written while Walton was the Chief Justice of Georgia. Legal document in the case Hancock v. Jack. Document declares that three negroes had been delivered by the "Commissioners of Confiscated Estates to Henry Allison." Allison had received the slaves as compensation for military service and had sold them to the defendant. Goes on to say that the plaintiff recovered them "as not having ever been public property." Written by Walton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, as a Colonel of Georgia militia to Major General Lincoln as commander of the Southern Department. Walton, who was wounded and captured during the defense of Savannah in December 1778, was exchanged in September 1779. He was elected Governor of Georgia November 1779-January 1780, before returning to Congress. References letter he wrote to Lincoln on 23 October 1779. Petition of Neilson to become a citizen of the United States approved by Walton. The endorsement certifies that Neilson is a native of Ireland and has lived in the United States since 1795. Includes signed affidavits by William Scott and James Murren vouching that Neilson has lived in the United States for at least five years and is of good moral character. Neilson signed on p. 2 that he will renounce allegiance to any foreign country, particularly Great Britain, and swear his allegiance to the United States.

Written by Walton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Colonel in the First Georgia Battalion who was severely wounded and captured during the Battle of Savannah in December 1778, to Lincoln as commander of the Southern Department. Walton sent Major Habersaw to British General Augustine Prevost to request relief for American prisoners in Sunbury, but Habershaw was denied entry into Savannah. Walton writes about defense preparations in Georgia. He advises that a full board of devoted men has been assembled and are in very good spirits. Indicates that they have prepared several fire vessels to defend against the British navy and erected a small battery below the town. He states that no rice ships will be allowed to sail until the Continental Congress is fully resolved. Letter addressed to Goddard as the Inspector General of the Constitutional Post Office. Upper left corner is torn.

Discusses the extradition of a murderer from a neighboring Catholic province, possibly Spanish Florida, to Georgia. Stresses the importance of this matter in making Georgia's government appear decisive and strong.
