At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Also signed by Jesse K. Hines, William T. Smyth, S. [R.?] Spencer, and Edward Wilkins. A committee transmits an inscribed silver pitcher, waiter, and goblets to Thomas Holliday Hicks at the end of his term as Maryland Governor. According to the committee's statement, the inscription reads: "To his excellency, Thomas Hollyday Hicks, Governor of the State of Maryland. From the Union men of Kent, for his unswerving devotion to the Constitution, and the Union."
