Jonathan Trumbull Jr. communicates a request from George Washington asking Knox to send a copy of the information Washington is to incorporate into a letter to Governor of Virginia Thomas Nelson. Washington also wants a list of the cannons Knox proposed be sold to reimburse William Ross. Possibly concerns indemnification for impressed supplies needed for the siege of Yorktown. Washington recently wrote a letter to the Governor of Maryland under similar circumstances (see GLC02437.01273). Trumbull was Washington's military secretary. Knox's reply appears in GLC02437.01286.

Says that Washington joins with them both and "the Gentlemen of your Garrison in the Joy communicated by the Happy News of Peace which is this morng announced from NYork." Says that Washington would like to have both Knox and Huntington and their families for dinner tomorrow. Written from "Head Quarters," which is probably at Newburgh, New York.

Writes that at present, lack of field officers can not be remedied. Reports that Colonel Rose is ill and Colonel Michael Jackson is unable to perform the duty. "Public service" written on address leaf with no signature.

Written by Jonathan Trumbull Jr., General Washington's secretary, to Major General Knox. Reports that Washington wants to inform Knox that the President of Congress announced on 24 June that Congress was to move to Princeton on 26 June. This was a reference to Congress leaving Philadelphia after protests from angry, unpaid veterans, a continuation of the long festering anger over nonpayment that had led to the Newburgh consiracy in early 1783. Wants him to look into the circumstances of the "4 superanuated Germans" mentioned by Major Sebastian Bauman (see GLC02437.02241). Wants Knox to report to Washington if they should be discharged. If he believes they should be discharged, Washington will provide the documentation.

Jonathan Trumbull Jr. writes, "If you have done with the perusal of the Proceedgs of the late Commissioners, the Commander in Chief wishes you to return them to Mr. Holden, for the Inspection of Genl. [William] Heath, who has been appointed to join you on the refusal of Genl. [Alexander] McDougall." In a post script on the address leaf, notes that the meeting of [commisioners] has been scheduled for 18 September at Tappan. "Public" written on address leaf.
