At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Sophie Thomson to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 11, 1973. Thomson is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "To me it seems that a few in the minority especially the newspapers are trying to destroy a truly great man."
