Thayer arrived in Washington and was transferred to the first battalion of the " 'Veteran Reserve Corps.'" He guards army supply trains traveling to Alexandria, Virginia. Says he is presently stationed at a camp on the Potomac, and sees troops passing through. He tells her that the whole army is "on the move," and he believes that they are changing their whole base of operations. Discusses the positions of the Union armies under the command of General Joseph Hooker and General Ambrose Burnside. Says he called on Ogden while on his way home from the Army, but she was not at home. Notes a few days later, he took sick and was instructed by the doctor to seek treatment in the North. He has been in Maine since July. Says home is no longer the same because many of the men have left to fight in the war. Notes that despite this, recruiting quotas were not met, and a draft was installed. Concludes by telling Ogden he will be coming to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to seek work.
