At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly transmitted for publication in the New York Times. Referring to General Robert Anderson, Commander of Fort Sumter, the telegram states "Fort Sumter has hoisted The White Flag. Anderson is coming up to the City." Written on stationery of the American Telegraph Company. Possibly transmitted from Charleston, South Carolina. Signed by James E. Spear. Contains frayed edges and several holes.
