A print of a photograph showing a company of artillerymen posed behind fortifications next to [heavy] artillery guns. There are two guns, one on either side of the photograph. Three officers stand on top of the rampart between the guns. Another group of men lounge on the ground just below the rampart, next to a stand of munition [spherical shells or solid shots]. erso notations: "XXIII" "692" Pencil note on back of mat attributes this image to Gardner and suggests a Century Co. provenance, however William M. Smith is credited for this photograph by the Library of Congress.

A print of a photograph bronze artillery gun [12 lb. Napoleon] and caisson inside Fort Totten's (1st, at Washington, DC. NY Ft. Totten not named so until 1898) gate. "Totten" painted across the top of the entrance. Six Union artillerymen stand between the guns and the gate. The insignia on the forage caps of some of the men indicate Co. D of the 3rd Mass. Heavy Artillery. Small sign on the slope in the background reads: "Keep off the Grass." Referenced in index of Photographic History of the Civil War. Verso notations: "Defenses of Wash." A print of a photograph of the officers of the 3rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery at Fort Totten. There are seven men present, none of them general officers. The door to the house is open revealing some of the interior of the house including the wallpaper and a piece of furniture. Note the screen netting on the open windows. Inscription on verso "Gardner 261." It has been suggested that this is a rare view of the inside of officers quarters.

A print of a photograph of the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery Regiment at Fort C. F. Smith. Approximately 28 men posed near an artillery pieces. The crew poses around their gun as the Number 1 man spongues the gun, and the Number 2 man holds a solid shot or shell. The Number 3 man holds his thumb over the vent. One man poses beneath a caisson [as though wounded] with his head and arms sticking out through the spokes.
