Title: Diary as secret US agent at New Orleans, Natchitoches, La., Washington, etc.

Shaler served as Madison and Monroe's secret agent in Louisiana on the Texas border. He was instructed to try to encourage revolution in Texas against Spanish and Mexican authority. At the same time, all of his activities had to be deniable. His letters and reflections, contained in the first two volumes (.01-.02), describe his relations with revolutionaries and other agents, his meetings with the President and his observations on power and spheres of influence. Title: Diary as secret US agent re: negotiations at Ghent, meetings, confidences

Shaler's diary from Ghent where he served temporarily on the Peace Commission while on his way to Algiers to negotiate a treaty. Shaler gained the confidence of Henry Clay, who relayed to him the negotiating positions of both sides. The book does not include his service in Algiers.

Printed by Cummings, Hilliard and Company. First edition. Original worn paperboards and quarter leather. Written by Shaler as American Consul General at Algiers. Includes chapter 7 "Extracts of the journal kept in the consulate of the United States, at Algiers," which appears to be the only original materials. (The rest appears to derive from other works, as per Shaler's preface.)

Collateral. Modern fine press reprint (no. 164) by the Saunder Studio Press, with an introduction by Lindley Bynum and illustrations by Ruth Saunders. Facsimiles of the titlepage and beginning reprinted from the Huntington Library copy. This is the first separate printing in book form. It originally appeared in the American Register, 1808. It is said to be the earliest first-hand account of California by an American.
