I shall not be happy till I hear of your having fulfilled them. I send you herewith a copy of the ages of your brother's and sisters to be inserted in a blank leaf of the Bible I gave you. It will enable you to remember them with a good wish, or a blessing on their birth days." Signed by 3 generations of the Rush family: Benjamin Rush (the Signer of the Declaration on front pastedown), Richard Rush (his son 1780-1859, on p. iii), and a namesake "Benjamin Rush/1860" (Richard's son, on front loose endpaper) The last named descendant has written a note annotating the Signer's signature "My grandfather, B.R. / 1860."

On the second anniversary of his recovery from illness, Rush thanks his sister for nursing him. His illness left him with strong ideas of the vanity of wealth, the evil of Sin, etc. He continues by talking about his delight in reading John Wesley's sermons concerning the rise and progress of Christianity, which Wesley described as a series of concentric circles. Rush also discusses a new translation of the four gospels by Dr. Campell of Aberdeen.
