Written by Captain John Rodgers to Lt. Isaac Mayo. Mayo is ordered to proceed to Philadelphia and to wait there for further orders for the purpose of assisting the recruiting officer there in shipping and transporting new recruits to the ship "North Carolina." Note on verso, initialed by Isaac Mayo, says that he remained in Philadelphia "several months" to assist the sailors on the "North Carolina" in Norfolk.

Written by Captain Rodgers from the U.S.S. North Carolina in port at Port Mahon, Spain. After receiving the report of Dr. Washington, Rodgers grants Mayo a three month leave of absence because of impaired health. The leave begins 1 November 1826. Envelope is a separate sheet (19.3 x 13.4 cm.) Note on verso says he went to Spain and later to Paris, where he spent part of the winter. Ran into many of his old shipmates. Says he was present during a conversation between James Fenimore Cooper and Sir Walter Scott. Says "it was a treat most truly - our Cooper was equal to Scott on all tasks." Then…

Title: to Isaac Mayo

Marked Private. Captain Rodgers writes to Lieutenant Mayo who is in Annapolis, Maryland. Says Secretary of the Navy Southard is about to appoint a lieutenant to superintend the naval school just established on board the frigate "Guerriere" at Norfolk, Virginia. State the pay will be equal to that of a Lieutenant Commander. Informs Mayo he will be appointed if he desires the post. Signed note on verso by Mayo says "It was kind in the old Comr. to remember me - but I declined the offer..." Says Rodgers' good opinion of him is quite a compliment.
