At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title: to Henry W. Beecher re: difficulties in graduating from medical school

Rice was a black doctor and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery who studied under Joseph Lister. He writes concerning his difficulties being accepted into medical school; Rice states: "I hope soon....to get my diploma from a school which stands first in the world & no thanks to N.Y. doctors...."
