The last page contains a full report on the last campaign of the Army of the Potomac, submitted by General George Gordon Meade.

The front page of this issue is a drawing of the commanding officers at Fort Sumter, less than a month before an attack on the fort would begin the hostilities of the Civil War. The news focuses on the Union forts that have already been turned over to the South and on Sumter, where a stalemate is underway. There is an illustration of a steam boat. The issue also contains a number of chapters from Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations" in their earliest American publication. The story is accompanied by a number of illustrations by John McLenan. The headline announces the firing on Fort Sumter by Confederate Troops, the beginning of the Civil War. Though the South had already seceded, physical confrontation did not begin until the fort was fired on. The paper reports in detail the events that occurred in South Carolina, and the reaction in Washington to these events. At this time most daily newspapers did not print Sunday editions, and since this was a Saturday there was no paper printed on the following day. However the demand for news of the war was so great that on the Times printed its first Sunday edition the very next week.…

Will speak December 20. Includes an incomplete newspaper clipping attached to verso. The clipping contains Horace Greeley's praise of Raymond (Raymond initially served as Greeley's assistant, before starting the Times).

Includes detailed descriptions of the conspirators in the court room. The testimony of A. W. Lee (military detective), Mr. Floyd, and Robert R. Jones (clerk of Kirkwood House) are also given. Jefferson Davis and his family are captured in Irwin County, Gerogia by Col. Pritchard. Davis attempts to escape by disguising himself in his wife's petticoat. Along with Davis and his family, Postmaster General Reagan, Col. Harrison his personal secretary, and others were also captured.
